Can you achieve your goals without being a workaholic?

The other day I wrote about working and doing too much, workaholics, being in the now and my friend Joe Vitale and his recent health scare. Many people, especially Americans, have come to believe that we have to work all the time. Longer and longer work weeks, less time for relaxing, more stress…is that what life is meant to be? How did we get to this point?
Sadly, it is not just what people do to keep up, many truly believe that is what you have to do to succeed and must do to be a virtuous, “good” person. Whether it is society, parents or school telling us hard work builds ‘character’ or the media telling us we need more TV’s, newer cars and bigger breasts that drives people to work, it is extracting joy from life.
Here is an example of someone I know personally. We used to go to the house of a friend of mine and spend one or 2 nights every other weekend. We had a blast. Chris and I would mastermind with her and her husband all night. We would cook, talk, share ideas, laugh, cry, support each other and have a great time. We would always come away with new ideas, new insights and a deeper friendship. We have seen them now only once in 8 months. She is too busy working. She works 16 hours and more a day for her job (she works from her home, but for someone else). If she isn’t working for her employer, she is working for herself, producing products and trying to keep up with 2- 3 new websites she has created. Recently we tried to get together with them and she said they couldn’t because on top of all this she was doing their taxes. So for weeks before April 15th, she was even busier, doing her own taxes.
For months over the holidays she was sleeping in her home office for a few hours at a time, and never even went to her bedroom to sleep. I think there were days in a row she worked 20 hours a day, maybe longer. Her husband was in his home office and they barely saw each other. This has been going on for 2 years that we know of, and to one degree or another for years before that. She declined joining us this past weekend, on a Saturday night, for Chris’ birthday dinner with a group of friends. It was at a lovely restaurant only a few miles from her house, but she stated she was way too busy and had to work all weekend. Too busy to take 2-3 hours off to eat and laugh with friends!?
Is this a life? I don’t think so. I have ben there. I won’t do that anymore. I won’t put off living for another day because I think I will reach some ‘place’, some goal, and then it will all be fine and i will be happy and have fun then. Never happens.
Perhaps you or people you know do not work quite that many hours a day. But how much do you work? Do you miss your kids events or just being there for them? Do you spend time everyday enjoying your loved ones, yourself, the world around you? I used to work 13 hours a day. I used to put my kids to bed and then stay up most of the night working, after working all day. I was proud of the fact i could sleep so little and work such long hours. I felt like I never got it all done. Like I had some end finish line, that if and when I go there, then I could live and enjoy and be with the people I loved. I kept thinking it was a means to an end. “It will only be for awhile” I would tell myself, “then I will be successful, wealthy, happy and I can relax and enjoy myself”. The problem is, I rarely see anyone that does this ever get to where they think they have enough and stop. Not unless something happens to stop them.
Please comment about your experiences with work and life. I am getting some great responses and I would love a conversation on this topic. It is very vital and affects everyone. Even if you do not over work or put off doing the things you love for the “right” time, I know you know someone who does, we all do.
Here’s a question I would like to hear your answers to : Do you believe you can achieve your goals without working all the time and sacrificing time sleeping, relaxing, enjoying?
Tomorrow I will talk some more about workaholism, some atitudes I see in people and how to start to “do less, acheive more”.
INSPIRED ACTION:Today, take a break more often, sit quietly and just be, watch birds, listen to music that inspires you or to your kids laughing and playing, hold your partners hand or send them a special note. BE totally in that moment, do not think of all you ‘have’ to do. Decide you deserve joy now, consider letting go of the need to achieve and living of the delayed life plan.
Life is delicious being in the moment

I want to share my weekend with you…it was so romantic, fun, relaxing, exciting, wild, delicious, wondrous, blissful, sensual and sensational….good food, great friends, amazing boyfriend, killer view, luxury service, pampering…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I talk about creating your own reality. I talk about enjoying life, celebrating each day, being in the present moment, appreciating those you love, looking for what you want, relaxing into life, doing less and enjoying more…well I mean it! I am living it! If you aren’t, wow, what you are missing!
This wasn’t just any great weekend because I went luxurious, wonderful places. It wasn’t so amazing, stellar and galactic because I did fun things and spent time with fun people. That is all true. It was ‘out of this world ‘ spectacular because of me. Yes, I was the difference!
I am what is different in my life. Yes, what I choose to do, focus on and experience is in many ways different, but it is not what is going on around me that is different, it is what is going in inside me! To me now, everyday is another journey into a life of present moment blissful creation and total enjoyment. I have committed to myself, to be in the now, enjoy life, and only do what I love. Appreciate every little thing. Notice, savor, immerse myself in all the sensations of that moment, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually.
I am enjoying life in more ways, levels, dimensions, depths that ever before because I consciously choose to be here 100%, in mind, body and spirit. Each moment I was fully present in what I was experiencing, the sensations, the emotional feelings, everything. I (even my mind!) was only there, no where else.
The weekend was special, it was my beloved’s birthday, and I love to celebrate birthdays! What a wonderful thing, the day this cherished being chose to come into this reality! I took him to Austin to the hotel where we fell in love at a dinner that Joe Vitale gave a little over 2 years ago. We had no idea what a truly luxurious, first class place it was! We had a river view room, with a view of the downtown skyline, the river and a private balcony. We could see this amazing view even from the bed, so all night I would wake up and just drink in the lights and beauty and sigh as I drifted off to sleep. The bed was sumptuous, the service was outstanding, the food was excellent. Champagne, strawberries and chocolate delivered ot the room….bliss.
We were pampered at Viva Day Spa with a couples retreat, , hours of sauna, massage, scrubs, and vanilla coconut body butter wraps….mmmmmm. I totally melted into my body, feeling everything the therapist was doing with total focus. Enjoying and appreciating, letting go. We ate succulent and mouth watering mixes of flavors and cuisines at Mars Restaurant. We laid by the pool, bright blue sky, overlooking the lake. The water was refreshing, the sun was warm and rejuvenating on my body. The breakfast buffet had fine French cheeses, fresh juicy fruits and anything else you can imagine. I closed my eys and melted completely into every bite. “I love this moment, I love this moment” I thought.
We had a blast with friends at Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Restaurant, with an unparalleled waiter; RC (yes, like the cola!). Exceptional food, drinks, service…more to celebrate, more to enjoy…We ended up at the jazz club The Elephant room…more to feel deeply, sensations to roll through my body, my mind and my soul. The intensity of the joy I felt kept escalating, I felt as if i would burst with the joy of the moments…one more delightful than the next. “I love this moment…”
The last day we snuggled in bed and watched the view after a delectable breakfast. I felt Chris’ warm skin near me, his arms around me, the soft bed linens enfolding me, the cool breeze caressing me, the view candy for my eyes. I relaxed into it, savoring every ounce of sensation and joy from the last hour we had there. I focused totally on this moment, the feeling, the happiness bubbling over inside me…thinking only “I love this moment, I love this moment”.
When we got home we had a flavorful and fun Thai dinner with friends, more joy, celebrating, fun…what a life I have! What am amazing reality I have chosen, allowed into my experience and am now truly appreciating and enjoying to the core of my being. I have had great times before, the reason this was multi dimensional, truly out of this works, was me. I was all their, in a happy state. I deserved it, i appreciated it, I chose it, I saw it, I allowed it and i shared it. Do it now, life is so phenomenal, don’t miss another moment by being somewhere else in your thoughts or mind. Be aware now and bliss out!!
To your bliss, Nan

Are health issues a sign to do less, enjoy and acheive more?

my friend, Joe Vitale, had a health scare. He went to the doctor and had an EKG. In his words “I passed but need to do less and relax more and THAT will be a challenge.” I am sharing my email to Joe below.
Well, I was going to tell you about my most wonderful, delicious, long weekend celebrating my beloved Chris’ birthday. If you follow me on twitter, (my twitter name is JoyfulNan), you have heard some of it already. I will tell all tomorrow, now I want to talk about Joe and working a lot.
I know what he means, I spent most of my life working hard, long hours and never thinking it was enough. I was raised to think that was virtuous, hard work. At least I did what I loved. But even though there was success, it never lasted or was satisfying in the end. About 2 years ago my world began to de-construct, the stress was intense, I ended up in the hospital undergoing test after test, I could not eat. I was in constant pain. I made a conscious intent to not do that anymore. No matter how worried I became about money or being worthy based on what I “accomplished” that day, I stopped myself. whenever the impulse came over me to run around and madly try to do something, make something happen, I would patently refuse.
Instead I would meditate, walk, think about something i love, sit in my yard and talk to my loved ones. Then I would take an action if and when I felt Inspired to do so. It has taken a long time, but bit by bit, I relaxed more and found that what I did had more power, more joy and more results. We are so conditioned to think we have to work all the time, it is a difficult mental shift at first. I hope you will do it before you have a health scare.
Here is what I wrote to Joe:
Hi Joe,
glad to hear you’re well. I encourage you not to think of “doing less’ as a bad thing!
I was a workaholic for years. I get more results now, by not having an agenda packed with tons of things to do, and have more joy now by doing less. I am more in the moment and the level of appreciation and the intensity of sensations is multiplied 1000x. When I choose to do less, I achieve more.
When I create from my expanded spiritual self, I stay more focused and “inspired” thoughts, ideas and actions come through me more. Then I follow through on those, but never to the exclusion of enjoying the people and things I love. I truly believe that my complete focus in the moment and my high level of appreciation of what I am doing at that moment gives it more power than any amount of “hard work” or long hours.Lining up my energy with what I want is more powerful to me than 100’s of hours of physical work. (I can see the results too!). Doing less can be highly satisfying and inspirational, you may be amazed what comes thru & to you!
Don’t misunderstand… I had to “unlearn” the doing a lot thing, it was a habit. It has taken about 1.5 years. I am enjoying the new life so much better, I sleep better, I feel better, I have more energy , and I am happier! Wonderful people and experiences show up in my life and I am almost always looking around at my life now, saying “I love this moment, I love this moment!”, and relaxing into it, deeper. This brings more possibilities into my reality, effortlessly.
You have the tools, see it as an adventure. I often tell myself “I am creating the most awesome life through joy, fun and loving what I do, and I will be an example to the world that it IS possible” Join my “create through joy experiment”! Lots of love and I see you as “already healed”…

Welcome to Create Your Life Now!
“There is more hunger for love and appreciation in the world today than for bread” Mother Teresa
What an amazing month it has been! Spring has brought all kinds of new opportunities, ideas, inspirations and wonderful new people into my world. It has been a month of monumental closure ( I am finally divorced after 3 years!..hooray!), luxurious and relaxing celebrations and incredible new heart openings and mind expansions! The month started with my divorce being finalized and week on the beach in a mansion. This is my ideal vacation, so I practiced more focus on being in the now and relaxing into the visions I want to create for myself. Feeling the becoming of what I see in my minds eye and let the divine energy run through my heart and out into the world. I read lots of new books about quantum physics and being in the now, and am incorporating more of these concepts into my work. My entire mental construct has shifted to new points of view and refined concepts of how to more easily manifest and step into what i am intentionally creating my life to be. I am combining those new, incredibly powerful ideas into easy to use techniques and getting them ready for you!
Probably the most memorable day this month was the one where I was literally living in bliss all day…what an exceptional experience! Love was coursing through me, love from my beloved, from everyone I met, from the universe, from me. Joy was ever present in my cells, dancing and playing, my whole body felt as if it was glowing and was expanded and light. Colors looked luminescent and trees and clouds and everything I looked at was as if it was multi layered, multidimensional, vibrating. My goal is to make that happen more and more often and get to where that is the norm! Wow, that will be well, bliss! Read about it here

~ What is the most powerful generator in the world?
May 1st is the release the “Heart Breath Manifestation†Meditation. This is a very powerful meditation combining your vision of what you want in you life with the power of emotions and learning to run it through the most powerful generator there is; your heart! The powerful audio meditation/visualization comes a manual where you will learn what your heart really is and how to use it, nurture it, open and expand it! Watch for it! I wrote a series of blogs about it this month that are very enlightening and give you an idea of what will be in the manual. I highly recommend you read them and get started creating in a more natural, easy and effective way than ever before. Focus on your heart, open it and see it filing with love and being a huge generator, magnetically attracting what you want into your life. Relax, you are a swirling mass of unending possibilities and the parts of your life that you do not want to live anymore are only one of those possibilities. Choose another one, and step into it.

We are having a couples spa retreat, staying at a luxury hotel, I am having champagne and chocolate covered strawberries waiting in the room when we arrive. We will have an intimate dinner and dancing one evening and a night out at Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine with friends the next. I intend to shower him with love and make sure he knows, feels and reels with the depth of my love and appreciation. I am so very pleased I have allowed myself to deserve and enjoy someone of such beauty, depth, intelligence and spirit. Creating your own reality is all about knowing your true self and your real desires and then relaxing into allowing them to be your experience. Participate in your dreams it is sooo much fun! What a way to celebrate life and the people who make it a fun adventure and a joyful, fulfilling experience.
I am so looking forward to what amazing possibilities May has in store for me and for you…..
Adversity brings strength, enlightenment, happiness

I watched a very moving and inspiring movie from spiritual cinema circle; “Tara Road” starring andie mcdowel. It moved me in many ways, and it was a wonderful example of how adversity always brings growth, strength and enlightenment.
I, like most people, have experienced deep pain and loss. I had a daughter die 14 years ago. I thought I would not live through it. She represented all my hopes and dreams at the time and I did not care if I lived for a long time.
I just completed a horrendous 3 year divorce, where people I love, and I thought loved me, behaved in such cruel, deceitful, intentionally hurtful ways, I could not eat for months and I watched my world crash around me.
I have had businesses I built up to great success on years of hard work, long hours and tons of sacrifice, collapse for a variety of reasons.
We all know pain, loss, grief, disappointment and we all would most likely never intentionally choose it. However, for some reason, that perceived pain and struggle brings us new understanding, new inner strength, new opportunities. The contrast of pain, gives us a stronger desire for joy. It challenges us to reach for something new: new thoughts, beliefs, people, places, experiences, understandings, power.
Every time I see someone have what they perceive as a “bad” thing happen in their lives, I know in my soul they are on a journey to a whole new view of life. A new way of living, a new level of self love and understanding. We have to grow in these situations, we force ourselves into it through these experiences.
I still would not say “yes, I want someone I love to die”…but I know and I mean I KNOW, it gave me strength, joy and understanding of myself and the world at a deeper level than I would have ever gone to if it had not happened. I am who I am today because I choose to find my way through these things. I looked for the “diamond” in the pile of……
eckart tolle and oprah are discussing this on their web event ” a new earth; awakening to your life’s purpose”. I am enjoying the discussion. Tolle said that he experienced so much pain and suffering his whole life, that he planned to kill himself starting at age 9. He says, however, there’s not a chance in the world that he would be who and where he is now if he had not had those experiences.
Jack Canfield says his childhood was terrible, but in the end, we all have pain, and now it’s “so what…what are YOU going to do with YOUR life now?”. Oprah’s childhood was not pleasant, and look what she has accomplished, and what she is doing with the fame and wealth she has built, she is spreading a message of love, enlightenment and self empowerment!!
Through these experiences we are offered a chance to take control of who we are, what we do and how we feel. We are given a doorway to a world richer than we ever imagined, a world we choose and create. Choose yours now, and yes, you can choose to learn through joy, but be aware…it takes more focus, because for some odd reason supposedly people will do more to avoid pain than to gain pleasure! How about you?

Today I have some inspiring lyrics to inspire and uplift you. I encourage you to take these to heart, they may be simple or seem cliché, but they resonate with the truth and this is how we are meant to live our lives. Go live your life now…
“Don’t hesitate to live your dreams, it’s more than worth it…
If you know what you want to be…
Why wait, now is the right time, it’s your turn, it’s your life,
the future is what you make, so why wait?
Don’t hesitate ..it’ll just pass you by
You’ve got to reach out, the world is in your hands,
You just have to go for it
I know you know how, you’ve just got to go for it
Take a chance
Why wait? You’re ready to do this, No way you can ever be stopped
Why wait? Now is the right time
Why wait? Tomorrow can be so far away, you’re already here
Why wait? You’ve just got to let go…
You’ve go to believe in yourself all the way
You know that you’ve got what it takes, so why wait?

“Life is supposed to be fun…” Abraham Hicks
I hope you enjoyed the new meditation moment video I posted yesterday “Celebrate Life!”. I got some nice comments and I wanted to talk a bit more about celebrating life every day.
I know it is hard for many of us to believe that we are, indeed, supposed to have fun and be happy. I know for me, I was programmed very early on by my parents that life isn’t all play, that suffering and working hard was revered and that I was supposed to stop being so happy and spontaneous all the time and get “serious”.
Any of you had that training too? I think most of us have had that to one degree or another.
“…that life was meant to be FUN! It’s hard to believe sometimes, but it’s true. It’s all about point of view.” Neale Donald Walsch
Over the years these ideas are reinforced by society. Our teachers and school rules, in the workplace and even with some of our friends and loved ones. People have been teaching people over the ages one after another the ideas around life being hard. We are taught there is lack, there is much to be afraid of, life isn’t easy, “no pain no gain”, “money doesn’t grow on trees”, “life is not a picnic” and so on. At times it appears hard to stay happy and positive amidst all this negativity, stress and fear. I know, I lived with depressed, negative people most of my life.
I have even discovered over the last 10 years that many people dislike ‘happy’ people! I see that people feel more miserable when they see a happy person. Apparently it makes people feel worse if they are not happy and they are with someone who is happy. Sad, really, that we cannot be genuinely happy for others and use their joy as an inspiration for finding our own!
I know we are meant to be happy, and as I live my joy more and more everyday, every moment, I know it more and more deeply. I have to still consciously tell myself, when a rush of joyful, excited energy goes through me, that “yes, you are meant to do this, that is what that feeling is telling you”…because even though I have come so far, I still occasionally have that parental voice say “now you can’t have/do everything you want!”.
INSPIRED ACTION:
You have to start where you are and;
1. Do Not feel guilty or bad in any way that you are not happy now or haven’t gotten this sooner.
2. Examine your thoughts and beliefs (repetitive thoughts that have their own pathway in your brain). Do you have negative thought patterns others told you about life? Do they support you and what You want to do/feel/be? Decide right now to choose your own thoughts and create your own beliefs
3. Decide, I mean really commit, that you want to be happy and you deserve to be happy and you are happy. Happiness is your natural state, so it will get real easy soon enough, even if at first we have to “work” at it. Remember these are just thoughts, thoughts are just energy and you are the sole creator of your thoughts…so you have all the power needed to change them.
4. Choose your thoughts and thus how you feel in each moment. Every day stop now and then and ‘check in’ with how you feel. Are you feeling joy? Are you letting outside circumstances, people or events dictate how you feel? Then CHOOSE, in that moment to feel happy. Think of when you were very happy and bring that feeling into your being, your body, your mind. The more detail you include, the easier it will be to begin to move towards a happier feeling. Take baby steps, do not judge yourself for where you are, remember #1.
5. Set up reminders in any way you can to help you to remember you are allowed to feel happy anytime, anywhere! Post notes on mirror, in wallet or on calender. Send yourself messages via text or email. Have others remind you with a call (sort of a ‘happiness accountability partner’).
6. Keep a proof journal. Each day at the end of the day jot down on your computer or in a notebook all the moments you experienced happiness that day and anything you did to really turn your emotions around. This will be fantastic positive reinforcement you can read later or just feel good about in the moment.
Once you start to see that you can choose happiness no matter what, you will be inspired with your own power, choices and of course… how great it feels to be happy and celebrate life every day!

Living in Bliss

Yesterday was an amazing day. I was literally living in bliss all day…what an exceptional experience!
I believe we are supposed to experience this everyday. I believe we are these powerful creators, who have chosen to be here. I believe that the only thing we have to do is SLOW DOWN and RELAX. If we would change our minds and believe that we have the power to change the world, indeed the universe with our thoughts, feelings and beliefs, we would experience this bliss daily. It’s all inside us.
We have a choice, most everyone believes that at some level, free will. That ability to choose means we can believe life is hard and nothing goes right for us, or we can believe life is wonderful and full of exciting adventures, wonderful opportunities and amazing people.
I am sure you have heard of “being in the “now”, oprah and eckhart tolle discuss it every Monday night on her world wide web event discussing his book “a new earth”. He is also the author of “the power of now”. He takes age old concepts and spiritual traditions and practices and simplifies them into concepts that you can apply.
Being aware and present to what we are doing in every moment is so powerful. Yesterday it was as if time slowed down, and my mind was not thinking, just being. Just being in this almost goofy, blissful state that felt like a giant inner smile!
Yesterday is now my pinnacle my goal, to access that level of bliss and enjoyment of life daily. The more you notice the moments of joy and bliss, the better you can recreate them attract them, and access them. I am so appreciative that I got to experience this state of joy and presence.
Today, I woke up and found an e card from my beloved. He sends me cards from bluemountain.com all the time. It is so amazing to be in love with someone so appreciative and expressive. It adds to my ability to access bliss and joy and belief in the well being of life. I wanted to share what the e card said with you.
“You show me dew drops and I have diamonds
You being me wildflowers and I have orchids
You hold my hand, And my whole being loves you…
I hope you know how much having you in my life means to me,
And how deeply I’ll always love you”
Elaine Reese
INSPIRED ACTION: So my wish for you today is that you feel like this about someone and they feel like this about you. And if you don’t , start believing you can and ask and look for it. And if you do, tell them how you feel, not just today, but everyday. The more you share how you feel, the more that wonderful feeling will take over your life and permeate into other areas. Tell the people you love how you feel and thank them for enriching your life. They will respond and you can live a blissful day too…today and a little more each day.
Choose to Believe…this is how everything is created… until you will find it is more common for you to be BEING, not thinking, LOVING, not judging and RECEIVING, not denying.
Most people live in their heads, the thoughts constantly racing ,the feeling they need to always be ‘accomplishing’ something. You only need to be, and you can do that no matter where you are and what you are doing.
Thank you for being here, for being you:
“I hope you know how much having you in my life means to me”…
